Clicking noise from forward into reverse?

I'm a newbie so sorry for the dump questions but my 89 bayliner 85 hp l-drive makes a clicking noise going from forward into reverse only for a few seconds. Is this normal . I let the motor spindown as much a possible. Going into Forward or reverse from a still position is quite and solid.... Any thoughts?

Sounds like the shifer needs adjustment or clutch and gears are getting worn. I dont know about L Drive but on standard drives there is an adjustment linkage to advance or retard the clutch. When you have the selector dead center on neutral will the prop spin freely by hand in either direction without any clicking noise?

The correct way to shift is fast. If your RPMs are to high this may happen. Does this motor have a tach? Idle should be around 800

Yep it's got a tech , i think that is whats happening. So it needs to be at Idle speed before shifting, It may have been a bit above when I shift and I've shifted it verry slowly because it sounded like the cluch needed to wind down before going into reverse.

The dreaded L-drive, or should I say hell drive. It sounds like you need to adjust the shift yoke on top of the out-drive. You'll see where the shift cable meets the drive right next to the exhaust bellow. You'll need to pull the cotterpin and then the pivot pin, then the arm that holds the shift cable will lift off. Trimming the motor fully up first will make this easier. It sounds like you need to turn the yoke, that the cable arm was connected to on the drive, out(un-screw). Go 1 turn at a time until you get close to where you want to be then take it in half turns. It doesn't sound like you need to adjust it much. I have a '91 l-drive on a 120hp that I did alot of work to last spring. Should be pretty close to the same. Hope this helps.
