Didn't know where else to put this, since it could apply to any make of outboard. Mods, feel free to move this if this forum isn't a good place for it.
I am rebuilding a 70's 6HP Johnson outboard. Whoever owned it before me had used it in salt/brackish water, and neglected to flush it. Fast forward 10 years, and I now own it. I have the engine apart, and have found some corrosion in the water passages, though it is not severe.
Are there any chemicals that could help clean out the corrosion, without harming the aluminum block? I am thinking to use Lime Away or CLR. I do not want to use Easy Off, knowing its bad repution with aluminum.
Also, what is a good method for getting down into the water passages to scrub them? A number of them are small so I can't get my fingers or something like a toothbrush in there.
All ideas are welcome.
