I pulled the lower unit out of my '84 Evinrude 140.

The oil mixed with water. However i had just changed the oil last week and ran the motor for the first time since that change today. I am assuming the seals or something just happen to go bad or let go today while running the engine.

Anyhow upon inspection my water pump is shot and i think i need to replace the seal on the drive shaft. But to get to the questions of my post. What is the procedure for cleaning the lower unit of the milk shake oil? What does a rebuild go for on a lower unit?

Thanks for your help
Marvin
http://www.speedjunkie.org/boat

Re: cleaning out lower unit

first question is are you sure the seals are on the fill and drain plugs that u took out when you changed the fluid ???i hear many people cleaning lower units with 2 stroke mix.but i usually just add fresh run it and drain it out and add fresh. this works for me.because you start replacing seals make sure your little seals are in the screws first and are not broken

Rebuilds are big $. Usually you can do what Wayne has suggested plus replacing the seals - I think you have seals on the prop shaft, driveshaft at the base of the water pump and at the base of the shift rod.

Again to Wayne's post - Did you use new gaskets for the fill and drain plugs?
