Any tips out there on how to clean up an older galvanized trailer? I'm thinking of trying steel wool soaked with marine penetrol.

go to the nearest hardware store, and for about $10.00 to $12.00 you can buy a syphine type sandbalsting gun. You then buy a bag of sylica sand I think it is like 5 to 10 pounds in weight.
and cost just a few bucks. then hook the gun to a simple air compresser and stick the syphine hose in the bag of sylica sand. start spraying the trailer and in no time at all you have a like new trailer ready for paint. this works very very well and is very low cost.(very fast and simple too)

DeltaR
I do not know what you are trying to clean off but can tell you this if you use steel wool or Sand blast it you will be sorry. First time it hits saltwater after that will be a solid RUST. You want to use some thing that will not scratch the Galvinizing. If it dirt use soap and water and wash it off. If is is rust I would a rust converter then spray with a ZINC RICH primer or cold galvanizing.

Makes sense what you say about the galvanizing. This trailer will never hit saltwater and I don't intend to paint it. Just want it to look better.
