I purchased an older mitchel-Garcia reel at a yard sale. Looks like it had not been washed of salt water for some time. What is the best method of cleaning green salt build up? I started to use a scotch bright pad, but it seemed to scuff the chrome finish too much. Any thoughts?
Michael

Re: Cleaning fishing reels

This may sound bad but I picked up an old reel myself once and soaked it in penetrating oil for about a week before I ever took a rag to it. Yes I took it apart first. At the end of the week (more or less) I then started cleaning it up with a rag and toothbrush. What did not wipe off got scrubbed off with the toothbrush. I am sure there would be a better way like some solvent or something but it worked for me.

Peterfisher is right to soak it in penetrating oil for a week. The other way that works is to soak it in an alkaline engine wash fluid. Alternately you could just try soaking it in fresh water and change the water every day for a fortnight. Eventually the salt encrustion will break down.
Ross

I've used Hoppes #9 gun cleaning solvent also. It works great for removing old green corrosion on brass/plated parts.
