Cleaning and Restoring Cap

I have a 1975 Chrysler Sport Satellite that I purchased last year. I am going to start doing some detailing soon to paint, getting rid of buttons and screws not used, repair small screw holes, and clean up the cap. Any ideas or suggestions on restoring the shine and getting rust stains off the cap? Were the caps painted with a gelcoat or another type of paint? It’s hard to find any information on anything but the hull. I have attached pictures of the day I brought it home, where I’m currently at, and the worst of the rust stains I’m talking about. Sat outside for 30 years in the elements, and she runs strong! Need to do her right with cosmetics.

Generally the hull and cap were gelcoat. This was sprayed into the mold first, followed by glass cloth and resin. Gelcoat is the most durable, but paint has a higher shine, generally. Most high end yachts are painted with Imron or Awlgrip paint. These are two part polyurethane, and are best left to the professional.

I have used Interlux Brightside paint, with good results. It is a one part polyurethane paint for above water use. On properly prepared FG, it can simply be rolled and tipped. Spraying works a bit better, but you need a shop or at least a warm day with no wind.

Cleaned up nice
Thank you, I was worried about how it would turn out. Last time the engine had been started was 92. It was in a backyard uncovered for that whole time under a tree. I scooped out 3-4 inches of soot and vegetation. Water had filled up under the floor because it couldn’t drain, carb was in pieces, I was nervous. Did some re- wiring, new starter, cleaned contact points on distributor and she fired up. Second Chrysler motor I’ve had and they are so solid
