So I pulled the head gasket cover off my '87 25 HP Evinrude to get to the thermostat (I believe this is the only way) and found the thermostat all rusted out and a ton of corrosion on the inside of the head gasket cover.

What is the best way to clean everything out?

thanks

Without seeing a picture I would imagine the best way is to get your scraper out and have at it. Best of luck. Rick.

Take it to a place that does media blasting , and have it cleaned that way,a quick paint and looks as good as new.

remove the lower unit, attach hose to water tube and flush motor.

Agree completely. A good backflush and scrape off any particularly hard bits.
