Hi, I am wondering if someone may help with a problem I am having with my Mercury classic 50. I can start my motor by jumping my solenoid with a screw driver, with the key on, it will shut down by using the key when turning it to off. I have by passed my kill switch because it looked bad, no help in doing so. I have 12+ volts at the starter. I just got the boat and would like to get out fishing, Can anyone please help ? Thanks Nat

There is a fuse ?-----------There is also a switch in the control box that only allows cranking in NEUTRAL , and you may want to check it.

I have checked all my connections, cleaned them all. when I did the connections to my starter and solenoid wiring I found the large post a bit loose, I replaced that solenoid, when looking at wiring photos, It makes me wonder if the wiring is right in the first place on this motor. The yellow wire from the starter is connected to the left side of the solenoid large post closest to the starter and on the other large post are 3 Red wires, one large and 2 smaller ones. Can this be Right ? would anyone know ? could this be the reason the motor would start by crossing the connections on the large post but not start by the key ? I am confused ! LOL Please help ! :) Thanks.

The starter solenoid 3/8" stud post is used as a junction terminal for battery voltage distribution (12v) throughout the engine and controls. Yes the reds are right.

The yellow wire or red wire with a yellow stripe is 12v from the remote control when the ignition key is in the START position. It applies 12v to an electrical coil inside the solenoid via one of the small terminals, not the large terminal as you mentioned, and if the coil is not internally grounded to the engine block through the mounting of the solenoid, there is a second small terminal that has a black wire attached which routes to the engine block to provide battery - (ground) and complete the circuit.

So yes, the yellow is on the wrong terminal. What's confusing to me here and you there, is that the current terminal is 3/8" and the correct one is like 1/8". If the lug is still attached, it is grossly out of proportion unless PO cut it off and either attached a different terminal sized to suit or just wrapped the bare wire around the stud.

The kill switch in the control box is ground when in the off position and is the black/yellow stripe (or yellow with black stripe...one is kill the other fuel enrichment and always forget which is which) and takes that ground to the trigger circuits and grounds them killing the engine.

So sir, move the yellow wire and your starter should work for you with the key.

Yes ! It is the neutral start switch ! I jumped it out and the motor turned. when I took the switch out on put my meter on it pressing the button every thing looked ok. but when installed it wont make the correct contact. could not get any adjustment on this, maybe the tip is worn or the spring is worn. anyway I will order a new one.
Thanks guys for all the great help. It is nice to know that I will be on the water soon. :) TEXASMARK and RACEONE...!!! THANKS !
