Go mercurypartsexpress.com and plug in your SN - you can find out there. I don't know the history of the Classic 50, but it has something to do with Mercury changing power ratings from head to prop.

Hopefully someone that knows will explain - you may also be able to find more just by doing a search here in the forums. I'm pretty sure I 've seen it mentioned.

Sorry, can't help you there. I found mine on maxrules.com and oldmercs.com but I don't what the O prefix means.

Again, hopefully someone with a bit more experience will chime in.

Re: Classic50, what year?

Its an 87 or 88 and it does have to do with changing HP rating from crank to prop. Essentially the same motor as the 50hp of the late 70's early 80's that's why Classic 50. Cowl should be white lettering grey band with small red stripe.

Re: Classic50, what year?

It is a 1987 model, 45hp 4 cylinder

They called them 45hp from 1986 to 1989 because they were trying to market its 3 cylinder cousin as the actual 50hp in those years.

The classic 4 cyl is a great motor.
