Hi All,

I have a '59 Gator trailer that I want to keep and restore since it's the original trailer for the boat and motor.

I have two questions about this trailer:

1) The trailer has a handle, approximately 2 ft long at the left front of the trailer, and when this handle is pulled outward toward the trailer frame it lifts the rear bunks to remove pressure from the rollers and keel. Does anyone know what this feature is called ??

2) I'll want to change all the bolts, nuts, washers, due to rust, and this includes the bolts that hold the leaf spring shackles. I've never removed leaf springs before, so if I jack up the trailer and remove all weight from the springs, can I remove the shackle bolts without special tools ?

Thanks,
Marty

Marty,
1) No idea
2) Shackle bolts may be siezed in spring bushings. Lots of WD40, a BFH (Big F------ Hammer) and a punch should do it. A propane torch may be needed. I've done it, its a fun job.

Gator called this "mechanized transom cradles". The purpose is to lift the boat via the bunks thereby tensioning the tie-down strap. I've had a Gator for 42 years and it's a great feature.

Many thanks for that info guys. Was the "mechanized transom cradles" feature designed to be used when the boat is back on the trailer but still in the water so that the boat is "lighter" to lift? Many thanks, Marty

Ranger has a similar feature on its new trailers. They say it is to lower the boat onto the rollers temporarily, to make it easier to launch/load in shallow ramps. They say to raise the bunks up to better support the boat while trailering.
