Classic Fifty electric choke testing and replacement

I have a 1986 Mercury Classic Fifty with an inoperable electric choke. I'm pretty sure the choke is bad. There is no power when pushing in on the key and a resultant "click" afterwards. However I would like to know the proper way to jump power to the hot lead on the choke to see for sure if the choke is bad or is there another culprit bad between key and choke. I tried running a direct wire from the positive side of the battery to the hot lead on the choke (with alligator clips) and nothing.Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check the Solenoid for Continuity, and also check its Grounding. You can also put a Light/Meter on the Lead going to the Solenoid and see if power is getting there when the Key is pushed in

Thanks Jimmbo, I did that first, then put the direct power to the power connection on the choke.. magnet did not engage, so it's coming out. Thanks for the response!

Hi. If no joy with the above advice, I think the choke wire from the remote control/ignition, is a yellow wire with a thin black stripe.

Thanks Q. There's power to the choke so I'm taking it out. It looks like the cowling support (frame at front of the motor) has to come out! Anybody ever taken a choke out of a 1986 Classic Fifty?? Maybe there a trick to it!

If it helps you any…I’m sure the choke is the same as the mariner 45, mercury 35-75 maybe too.

Testing..Since the electric choke is grounded by it's attachment to the frame..shouldn't a independant hot wire from the battery's hot side activate it? I'm thinking I'm bypassing the neutral and key switch and delivering power directly to the solenoid's hot lead... I'm not getting a response from the solenoid (It's brand new) Am I not hooking it up right to get power from the battery to the hot lead of the choke?
