Classic fifty, carbon build up on pin top of drive shaft

I am replaceing the water pump. After much struggle to get the gear housing off I seem to be in good shape, but I have a couple question.

There is a pin at the top of the drive shaft that was encrusted with what looked like oily carbon build up. I bought a new pin and spring as per my parts manual but 1) the pin does not look the same as what is there (on mine the "pin" looks like an extenstion of the drive shaft itself), anyone know if these shafts were made both ways? and 2) should I be concerned about this carbon build up, and would I likely be ok just to put it back together as it is?
