Sorry guys didn't mean to confuse, again I'm an amature in regards to outboards (all I've ever owned prior to this was a trolling motor on a canoe). I'm looking for a used 2.5 or 3.3 horse power motor to push an inflatable that's rated for 3 horse power. I just feel like I'm at the mercy of the seller when I go to look at what they've got. Thanks alot for your replies, it's good to get an idea of what to look for. BTW I assume I can pick up something for checking compression at a local marine outfitter.

Re: clarification

As far as a compression tester, hit your local auto parts store. If you're not going to use it a lot, a cheap one is fine. Get the type with a screw in fitting, though. The push-in types are rough to use solo! :) Shouldn't run you more than $20 or so. When you go to look at a motor, ask to see the gear oil. Also, when the impeller was last changed, was it fogged when stored, etc. Shopping for a 1 cylinder makes the compression test easy! Even better if you have a mechanically inclined buddy to go along. Good luck!

Re: clarification

Go to harborfreight.com and they have a great compression tester for $19.99. I have personally tested 6 against a SNAP-ON compression tester and all were exactly 20# lower. I use them in my shop and just add 20#, as do at least 10 other techs and one marine tech training program I know of.
