You should be idleing at 650 to 700 in gear. Have you checked your bleed lines for cracks, most of the earlier V/6s tended to load up and smoke at idle does your? If it doesn't try triming it all the way down and see if that slows the idle, in is rich, out is lean and that might give some answers or at lest ideas---Bob

hello
also double check your tach with an inductive one. the tach drive signal may be off slightly. if it was in fact idling that high you should also see a definate stiffness trying to go from in gear to netrual. sometimes the idle timing has to be set a few degrees further ATDC to slow them down. 900-100 in netrual is about right on a flusher but its not supposed to be over 750 in netral in the water. I cant remember when the idle stabilizer feature came out but yours may have had it. without your seriel # I cant find it and even then I am not sure my manuals go back that far. what is the idle timing set at now ? what is your in gear idle speed with the boat untied and idleing in the pond ?

in is rich, out is lean What does this mean I have no adjustments on carb Yes I have Checked bleed lines will double check yes it does idle lower when trimed al the way down but only to about 800, one other thing it shifts easy in and out of forword but it is kind of stif going in and out of reverse

Re: Clams Canino or Laddies

are the tests in or out of the water?
if idle speed changes much while trimmi9ng check for needle valve leaks and float setting. so speed change will just be due to a lessening of back pressure more than 50 rpm or so may indicate a rich running at full trim in. usually caused by a needle leak or a float to high.if the rpm change is up and down on the flusher its normally a carb malfunction.

Virago, I was just thinking and several years ago we had a older V/6 someone had put a idle stabilizer on in the shop, if yours had been updated with one that could be your problem--Bob

Ok rechecked my carb floats and they are set at less then 1/6 not much though. the manual calls for 1/6 would that make it idle high

Re: Clams Canino or Laddies

One more thing the manual says measure from the base of carb to the botom of float 1/6" now are they considering the gasket flange with gasket removed the base are do they want me to go below the flange to the next lip which is about an 1/8" lower I'm thinking the lower lip becouse when I tilt my motor all way up fuel comes from carbs are is this normal

Re: Clams Canino or Laddies

Virago, you can get the gaskets at NAPA, I don't set the floats the way your doing it so I cannot give you much advise on that way. We have a pressure gauge on a fuel line that we hook to a tank and the float bowl fuel connection, pump the bowl full to the boss on the inside of the bowl and set the fuel level to the top of the boss with 8# fuel pressure---Bob

Re: Clams Canino or Laddies

If i set the top of float at 1/6 above boss on the inside of the bowl and hook the primer bulb up to it the fuel come just up to the top of the boss on the inside of bowl does this sound right and would to much fuel cause it to idle high Thanks for all your help

Re: Clams Canino or Laddies

Thats the proper way, it tests the float height and the ability of the inlet needles to stop the fuel flow--Bob

Man Thanks! So the fuel should only come to the top of the boss on the inside of the bowl?

Re: Clams Canino or Laddies

maybe... but extra fuel usually won; tmake it idle high. Try disconnecting the idle stabilizer, it might be broken in "advanced" mode.

-W
