chrysler sterndrive problem

Hi All...

I've posted this problem on 2 other sites with no luck, so here goes.

I have the sterndrive leg (chrysler 300) of the boat for repairs
(the mounts on the case needed welding).
I've replaced the uni's on the drive coupling, had the slip joint seal surface
re-sleeved, and replaced the coupling bearing and seal.
The bearing housing is shimmed up and turning fine..

When I rotate the coupling in neutral, all is smooth and quiet.
Select reverse, again, all smooth and quiet, and the prop shaft turns in the
appropriate direction.
However, select forward, and the two crownwheels in the gearbox start to turn, (maybe 5 degrees) then nothing, like it's in neutral.

I'm trying to find out if there is a shear pin or key, or some sort of drive engaging mechanism, etc, and if parts are still available, before I pull this
apart.

Many thanks in advance if anyone can shed some light on this.

Henry.

C'mon Fellas, even guesses accepted..

Surely someone has pulled down one of these before.

Ayuh,......

And in 1 of those threads it was noted that Marysville Marine up in Michigan is about the Only resource for those Drives.......

Google them up,..... Their website has some Really Nice parts breakdowns,+ you should be able to See if there's some sort of Shear Pin in them.....

As you can see,.....
Those are Not a popular drive,+ Few to Nobody has any clue as to How they're put together......

Good Luck......

Re: chrysler sterndrive problem

last one I worked on was in the late 70s, had a 225 slant six with a chysler outdrive. its very similar to a volvo but out of memory I cant tell the difference.
only thing I do remember is the input had to rotate left or nothing worked. and they were painted white :).
other than that its like working on a BMW drive. no parts,no support and very limited service information.

Re: chrysler sterndrive problem

Thanks Fellas..

Just up front on this, I've rang around and spoken to quite a few people on this,
and been met with plenty a glazed stare, or "why don't you update to a
new sterndrive"...

I've spent nights on the net searching, and on the
Marysville Marine site after that tip, but to no avail,
They don't seem to do much on Chryslers anymore.
All I could find was a parts catalogue for sale.

I did find a site that may have a service book in stock, so that might
be the way to go.

Not giving up yet tho, maybe just havn't found the right site yet.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Henry. :)

Re: chrysler sterndrive problem

Hi again.

Yep, done the e bay trawl over and over, that was the first place I
started..

Steele Spike, if you mean the Chrysler Crew on this site, then yep,
my first post was moved from there to here...

But just in case there is another chrysler crew, I will try googling that.

Thanks again, Henry.
