I have been preparing to tune up a mid 1970's Chrysler 105hp outboard. I have been looking at diagrams for the motor's ignition system and it seems that there have been many ignition systems used on the 105hp motor over the years. This motor has no CD unit on it and looks like it may have had the unit removed at one point. It has a coil, distributor and condensor. Was it common to remove these cd units? Can anyone explain what the cd units do and how? I may be gettng another scrap 105 hp that has a different ignition system with (4 coils),one on each spark plug and seems to have no distributor.Does anyone know if there is a better and worse ignition sytem to use and if i should do anything to change what I have?
Thanks a bunch. Re: Chrysler outboard igniton history?

Tom,
I would like to replace my Chrysler 3 cyl CD TYPE ignition with a Condenser/coil type system similar to the one you described in your inquiry.
Did you have any luck with your Condensor/coil set-up? Would you share any wisdom you may have gained?

Best regards,
Bob S.

Tom,
Stay with your original distributor iginition, do not use that system with four coils on the back of the head. That system had a lot of problems, you need to get a cd box back on the motor the way it was set up from the factory. the reason the box was there is it can produce a faster and hotter spark than just a coil. without the cd box the motor will suffer performance loss and have tendency to load up. Good luck, Bret

If you need further assistance please email me @ forcepower01@yahoo.com. thanks,Bret
