I have a 1976 35 HP chrysler outboard. I haven't had any problems with it, up until now.
It fires and runs first try. The problem is it runs at trolling speed at full throttle. It's only running at about 1/4 of its power.
I have checked all the linkage and it seems fine.
I have checked the fuel lines and filter and it seems fine.
I have also run some carb. cleaner threw it but it didn't make a differnce.
I also checked the float in the sediment bowl and cleaned it. It didn't help.
I did reset the idle screw. It didn't help.

I can't find the throttle screw.I have searched all ove the engine and carb. Can anybody tell me where it is?
It did fire up and run on one spark plug. The motor takes two plugs. How can it fire up and run on one plug?
I'm going to replace both plugs in the morning. I'll let you now how that goes.

Does anyone have any suggestions that I might try?

Re: chrysler outboard help

when was the last it ran? did you run the fuel dry before shutting it off? i have an old chrysler 9.9 and that thing gums up it's main jet in a month if i don't run the fuel dry after letting it sit.

Re: chrysler outboard help

naughtybynature, do you recomend running it dry each time I use it?
I've been running it about three times a week. I've been trying for some monster flatheads! The last time it ran was about four days in between.

norman158
I've tried three differnet plug gaps.(028, 032, and 040) I'll try 030.
What would be a good way to test the plugs I have? Could I start the motor, then pull the plug wire off each plug and see if the motor dies or keeps running? If it keeps running and there is not a differnce, then would the plug be fouled?Anyway,I'm going to get new plugs in the morning. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for all the help.

Re: chrysler outboard help

well i try to as a rule, you never know when something might come up and you can't get back out i the boat. my 9.9 is at the cabin so some weekends i don't get back there(like this one)

if you are runnin git that much i wouldn't think bad gas is your problem. try removing a plug wire one at a time to see if a cylinder is down. new plugs won't hurt for sure. make sure wires are ok too. check boots to see if seated to top of plug properly. don't do this when engine running, can be a shocking expereince... don't ask me how i know this.

Re: chrysler outboard help

Update

I went to Oriely's this morning and purchased 2 sets of NGK plugs for the boat.
FYI-They do sale solid core plug wires, you cut them to fit and install the boots.
However, after changeing the plugs it didn't make a differnce. The plug wires I have are not solid core.
I took off each wire separtely and put it on my truck. Each time the truck fired up and ran normal, so I think the plug wires are good.
When I take the wire off while the boat engine is running, the top plug doesn't make a differnce, the bottom, the engine will die.
I switched the plug wires on the boat and still the same thing. So I switched the wires to the coils and it wouldn't start or run.
So both plugs are good, and the plug wires are good. One coils if fireing the bottom plug, but not the top.
How do I tell if the coil is bad? Can I switch them around? Then would the top plug fire and run? If it is the coil, were can I find a replacement?
Could it be the points?
I'm narrowing my problem down, thanks to this forum and all the people here.
Thanks for the help.

Re: chrysler outboard help

you can switch them around . I did on my 45hp chrysler and then both coils started firing. May have been a dirty connection.
If you need parts you could try http://fairwindsmarina.com
They have a lot of chrysler parts. also search this forum, someone posted a whole list of places to get chrysler parts not long ago. good luck,

Rich

Re: chrysler outboard help

Another Update
I switched the coils around. Before I switched the coils only the bottom plug was fireing.
Now after I switched the coils, the top plug is the only plug fireing.
The culprit has to be the coil. It does have a crack in it, and it is leeking some kind of very thick oil substance, more like very thick honey.
I'm going to order a coil for it and I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for all the everybody!
