I have an inboard Chrysler in my old tug. The tag ID says the engine is a M273. I understand there is very little difference between the 273 and the 318 engine. I am having a hard time finding any parts listings for the M273, but tons of parts for the 318. I am considering buying a complete long block to replace this tired old Chrysler. I was hoping all the bolt on parts (intake, ignition, covers ect.) are interchangeable from the 273 to the 318. The intake is a four barrel and the ignition is single point distributer. If I buy a reman block and heads am I going to have to buy all the other stuff? Or is the 273 stuff going to work?

A 360 would be great, But there again, are parts going to work or am I going to have to buy a complete turnkey engine?

External 273 and 318 parts are interchangeble. The 318 has a larger bore than the 273 but they have the same stroke. Motor mounts, bellhousing pattern, valve covers, intake manifold, and distributor are all interchangeable.

The 360 oil pan is different and the motor mounts are different from the 273/318.

Also, the 360 is externally balanced so you will have to add balance weights to the flywheel. The motor mount difference could be solved by adding washers to the motor mount to shim it. I believe the port side mount is the problem since the mount bosses were relocated.

Re: Chrysler M273 V8 advice

Ok cool so all I would need is an oil pan.
Let me throw this at you. The boat is a single wheel inboard. My options are really open to repower. I just need to consider the dimensions of the bilge. I have a 71C Velvet drive. I know to repower with a new engine is outside my budget. way outside! (would love a good diesel though)
I wonder if it would be more cost effective to find a complete used inboard. Would a Chevy or a Ford be easier (cheaper) to put together?
I am trying to work off what I already have. However the boat is a bit underpowered. The 360 would be a step up, no question, but should I be looking at a completely different setup? Remember money is short these days.

I have nothing technical to add to this discussion bad had to say what a phenomenal job you did on that restoration drew. I am envious!
