I would like to hook up a tach, speedo, volt meter to my 81 merc 40hp. I found some gauges from a chrysler o/b. I can't find a speedo made for an 81 merc. Is there even a way to hook it up. Sorry for the ignorance. I'm learning as I go.

I am sure some merc experts will chime in on this one but i will telll you what i know. An Outboard's tach signal comes from the stator.I think Chrysler uses a 20 pole stator and mercury uses a 12 pole so it will not work unless there is a selector dial on the back of the tach to allow usage on different engines. One good thing though,if you look on the net you can find a new tach with a fixed 12 pole setting fo 20 bucks . I did and it works great. Speedo isn't outboard dependent. It uses a Pitot tube mounted to the transom to drive the speedo. They are universal so any marine shop will sell them. Volt meter should be universal as well. Good luck.
