Hi All,

I picked up a 1971 chrysler 45 hp (458BA) with what looks to be the magnapower ignition. Just points under the flywheel, external CDI unit (motorola 9GC0), rectifier. Anyway, I wired up the ignition system according to the manual, when I tried to start it there was no spark and after about 10 seconds the CDI unit started to smoke?!? I checked all of the wiring and nothing was (is) crossed, there is power going to the unit but not to the coils. I'm thinking my unit is fried. Is there an easy way to test before I yank the thing apart to see if I can fix, if I can't...is there any available out there?

If anyone has a diagram to convert from CDI to automotive coils I'll give that a go!!

Thanks,

R

Re: Chrysler CDI problem

I'd go to the "CDI Electronics" or "Outboard ignition" (dot) coms, websites to troubleshoot. CDI's is pretty easy to follow and walk you through troubleshooting step-by-step. Good luck.

Re: Chrysler CDI problem

Your Cd box has an internal short. These boxes are usually not repairable.

It is easy to convert to auto type coils. you need two coils and that's it. Run the blue wire from the "I" terminal on the ignition switch to each positive terminal on the coils. Run a white wire from the negative terminal to the correct set of points. Use either a 12 volt coil or a regular coil which uses 9 volts and a resistor in line with the blue. If your engine does not have coils, better yet, see if you can find a pair off a junker. If your engine does have coils, I don't know if they would work on 12 volts--try it, you have nothing to lose.

+1 to what Frank said. I had a Chyrsler 50hp that ran fine with 2 automotive coils.
