I purchased a Chrysler 9.9 motor. The linkage in the handle that controls the speed appears to have been jury-rigged with a universal joint that will not allow the handle to be properly attached to motor. I have been looking for info on the internet but can not find any info that shows what the connection is made between the 2 rods that work together to control the speed. I have found manuals for Chrysler motors but do want to buy one unless I know that it shows the info that I need. Anyone got any suggestions?

Can't speak for the Chrysler but OMC usually uses 2 toothed sprockets that
mesh a few cogs with the tiller raised and and mesh fully in operating position.
You might cunsult the Chrysler crew.

Re: Chrysler 9.9 outboard motor

It is difficult to describe but the connection is made through two "gears" about one inch in diameter that have "balls" around the perimeter instead of teeth. The balls allow the gears to mesh in any position of the tiller handle including folded fully up or down. They are held to the rods with roll pins tapped into drilled holes. As far as I know, this was used on all 9.9 through 15 engines and (I think) some tiller models 20 through 35 HP. and never changed when Force took over.

Since they tend to wear, they should be a common replacement part.

If you can not get them at your local mercury dealer as a Force part (Probably very dear in price), then try franzmarine.com.

While they are not mentioned in Clymers, there is a partial photo of one on page 149, figure 25 (my edition) Chapter: Synchronization and Linkage Adjustments.
