I have a 74-79 chrysler 75 hp model # 757HC
serial # 19440 . Ignition- cd Rapaired 523301-1.
I just bought boat $100.00 needs floor and motor wont start but backfires about every 8 turns.Plugs fire outside engine and carbs seem to be working.
I tried to set timing but unsure of process.Removed flywheel to check key. Key was ok but broke distributor belt.Ordered belt on line.I need help with setting timimg and how to check out electronic ignition without special equipment.I have multi meter and timing light and motor shop manual.Manual explains how to use test equipment I dont have.Based on experince with car and cycles it seems fire is real weak.Tried coil off 50 hp no help .
 • Any help will be great.

Re: Chrysler 75hp Will not start

Hi,

So you are definitely getting spark on a spark tester or in some other manner? If it is backfiring, the timing is either off or perhaps the plug wires are not hooked up in the proper order.

The first step in setting the timing is to have the curve mark on top of the distributor pulley lined up with the curve of the flywheel. Then have the "I" mark or "TDC" mark on the flywheel line up with the index mark on the timing guage. This should at least get it started.

There are some very knowing individuals on this board that will probably help you much more than this.

Shane

Place the fly wheel TDC with the timing gauge witch i think says 0 then the distrubter gear witch the belt goes around line the indent up with the other mark on the flywheel.
