The wire under the dis cap closes to the motor is #1 go clockwise #2 #3 Top cyclinder is #1then 2 3. For the timming part Check the disturbutor belt pully for a mark. Line it up with the one on the flywheel hope it helps

Chris

What is the history on this engine. We need more info. When was the last time the engine ran right and what has been done to it since?

When I bought it didnt run so I dont know much about it.The man I got it from had traded a small fishing boat for it.But he couldnt make it run either.Well he didnt try very hard and never bought any parts for it.The man he got it from said it had been siting a long time.It was his wifes boat and she had died and he couldnt stand to use it anymore.

are you sure it's an ignition problem? Maybe the carb's loading the crankcase with gas. Super rich mixture could foul plugs and look like weak spark (??).

Kinda guessin' here, but it's a thought. I had a snowmobile with similar problem in the past, was a stuck float.

Brent

JDA...I would suggest that you definately get a manual that covers that motor, a mid to late 70's model...I think the seloc book has a reasonable troubleshooting section for the ignition...if you have proper spark, compression, and fuel, you need to make sure the spark is firing at the right time and there's enough of it...just a Thought

Try a compression check. does it back fire through carbs or the exaust.

I have a manuel and am looking at Backfires and the only thing it say to check is

1.cracked spark plug insulator
2.carbon path on the distributer
3.crossed spark plug wires.
4.improper ignition timing

crossed plug wires is a distinct possibility for this scenario...just a Thought

Thanks to all of you who have replied to my call for help! Iam still waiting for the distributor belt I broke to arrive so I can try some of the things you have suggested. Please keep the Ideas comming .With your help Iam starting to feel good about fixing this motor. Also guys the floor of the boat has a couple of soft spots and one that has broke through.I cant see the damage for the carpet.I do plan to tear out carpet and repair floor. My question is do I remove old floor or put new plywood over it? And what do I need to use to repair it? Remember Im on a tight budget.
