Chrysler 6 Rewind Method

I have inherited an old Chrysler 6 outboard, Model 6602. My puzzle is it is missing the starter rope and when I opened it up could not figure where one goes. Maybe there's a part missing but not obvious, and see a plastic spool and level wind mechanism above it and pinion gear, but no sign of a rewind spring or place to fasten the cord.

Hi there melm. The spring is inside the cylinder that's inside the plastic spool. From your description, it sounds like everything is there but the rope. These Chrysler pull starters are notoriously hard to work on and fine tune. A standard lawn mower pull cord will work on your starter, but installing is quite tricky. Go to the library and get a manual for your motor and it will describe the procedure. I'm sure you know you can also start that motor by wraping a cord clockwise around the flywheel and pull starting it that way. Good luck. Keep posting and let us know how it goes.

Hi melm

Did you figured out how to tie the starter rope? I have the same outboard engine, 6 hp model 62BD in parts and can send you a picture of the starter gear unit with rope attached if desired.

Just let me know

Martin in New Brunswick
