I purchased an older Chrysler 55 outboard. it has no ignition switch and am needing the schematic of the ignition, or source for an ignition switch. Its model number 5591. if anybody can help i would appreciate it.
it does have the wiring harnes with large red and black wires. other wires are purple white yellow green blue orange. These are all labled on the engine as ing, tach etc. so even the connections need to make it run i could use a substitute switch. Jon

Re: Chrysler 55hp outboard wiring schematic needed

motor is from 1969 and probably has no alternator. Wiring diagrams are not allowed here due to copyright infringments. The wiring from the harness to the terminal block should be as follows

Yellow to yellow Starter solinoid wire(small connector)
White to upper brown wire (ignition)
Green to Green wire to choke solinoid
Orange to nothing or orange heat sensor
Red to red wire (+ voltage to motor)
Blue to bottom Brown wire going to ignition
Black to black (Ground

At the key side chances are if you dont have an over heat alarm or guages that the orange, purple and black wires will just be hanging. The purple wire is for a Tach where if you had one it would connect to a rectifier on the outboard.

Re: Chrysler 55hp outboard wiring schematic needed

Ah. thanks. i don't actually see the brown wires. all wires are labled by a small sticker on the side of the motor as follows.
yellow = Starter
purple = Gen
white = tach
green = choke
orange = heat
red = Batt +
blue = Ing
black = gnd.
so to use a substitute ignition switch (thinking automotive type) i am thinking just to make it fire would be connect purple to blue, then red connected to yellow will engage starter, which it does. MY delima is i dont want to harm the magnapower box so i want to be sure before connecting anything other than just turning over the motor to check compression, which at this point looks good. but tio get spark i know i have to at least connect something to blue.

The colors I mentioned should be connected to the barrier strip on the outboard and look similar to this.

As you will note there is nothing connected to the orange or purple wire. I dont have a overheat sensor nor do I have a rectifier for the tach to read off of. The brown wires I mentioned are the wires coming off of my coils. I would recommmend buying a correct switch. A chrysler switch has a push feature that engages the choke. In order for you to get it to work you would need a separate switch for that. The kill is when the blue and white wire are grounded out which is caused by the switch. A new switch can be ordered from a Merc dealer part number is F5H078 and the cost is $40
