Hey

Having problem removing lower unit on my Chrysler 5 HP outboard engine. I've followed the service manual (see link), and I have removed both the hex-head screws (four) and the gear shift rod screw, but the Lower unit won't slide out. I've tried to hammer on the edges aswell, but it seems like it's totaly stuck. This motor hasn't been taken apart in a long time.

Could it be rust keeping it from releaseing? Any opinon what to do, or if there is something else that needs to be removed before I can remove the lower unit?

http://www.chrysler-marine.com/outboard/ob1028.pdf <- Service Manual for the 52H model.

Getting crazy here, need to change the impeller.
Thanks for any answer!

I've searched the forum. Looks likes corrosion might be a common problem on the driveshaft.

Anyone's been having this problem while trying to remove the lower unit?

If the lower is completly free it should drop out.
If the upper grooves/splines are rusted or bent,it might not ever come out.
A rubber hammer or a piece of wood with a hammer???
Be careful as it's OLD aluminum.J

ok, but there shouldnt be anything else i need to remove then?
Yeah, did the whole hammer and wood for a while.
I guess i just need to hammer untill it comes out. Cant use the egine if i cant change the impeller.

Oh, and thanks for the info!

Re: Chrysler 5 HP (52HA) - How to remove Lower Unit?

Finally manged to remove the lower unit!

If anyone out there gots an 4.4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9.9 hp Chrysler outboarder I can recommend a use a heatgun to heat up the upper grooves/splines.

I did the following:

1. Remove the 4 bolts

2. Remove the screw holding the gearshift.

3. Removing lower unit

Applying force on the lower unit - Didn't help
I then tried to use PB blaster (or similar swedish rust remover), then pressure/force the lower unit down. Did help maby 0,5mm (dunno in inch, not much atleast) or so.
I repeated this many times, letting the rust remover soak for 3-4 days and applying PB blaster maby 2-3 times a day.
Then finally used a heat gun, blowing heat into the upper unit for about 20 minutes.
When It got really hot I put a wrench flat into one side on the lower unit and a metal bar into the other side.
Then I started hitting the hammer on a plummer wrench aimed at the metal bar side. Finally it droped down.

I dont know what actually made the lower unit drop ,but I would guess that the heatgun helped alot.
Now it's time to open up the impeller casing.. seems like the screws there are again stuck.
