So I'm looking at a boat and the ad says that it has twin 460 Chryslers in it but I've been looking and I don't see where they made a 460 Chrysler only a 440? Is this correct or has someone been in there messing and gomming with internal engine parts? I also saw that ford made a 460 as well is there any blatent things that will differentiate the ford from the Chrysler? I.e. distributor location shape of the intake timing cover or water pump. Thank you for the help! Levi

On Chrysler 440 and their other big blocks the distributors are on the front of the engine, looking at the front they are on the left and are at an angle.

Hey guy thanks for the replies !! LOOKS like its is a 460 but why does it say Chrysler 340 on top of the flash arrestor? Here's a pic from the ad the boat is in Key Largo and I'm in Jensen beach so its a pretty good haul down there JUST to look.

The second pic shows a Chrysler electronic ignition amplifier mounted to the left on that big flat bracket, that bracket on the engine in the first pic seems to be missing that component. The distributor looks like the small cap that Chryslers run, and in order to use the ignition amplifier the innards must be Chrysler. The plug wires are routed between the valve cover and exhaust manifold like a Chrysler small block. The valve covers look tall and narrow like a 340, could just be the pic perspective. Distributors are dead in the middle at the back in automotive versions of Chrylser small blocks like the 340, so the rest of the block in those pics show a very odd config if it is a Chrysler 340. Engine in "backwards", with engine circulating pump at the back and accessories there too, power take off at the front I am guessing. .Or maybe they are just using Chrysler ignition and flame arrestor and hat from some other donor boat somehow, never heard of that ignition crossover for Ford distributors though.

What about these make you think it is a Ford 460? Just curious.

Don't the small block 340's have the Dizzy in the back, like a small block chevy?

Yup, Distributors are dead in the middle at the back in automotive versions of Chrysler small blocks like the 340, so the rest of the block in those pics show a very odd config if it is a Chrysler 340.

small block Mopars with intakes that have the T-stat housing in the back.

could be 318's, or 360's

Scott, I'm thinkin' the block has to be different also, has engine water pump and accessories at the back, and flywheel at the front. Very Marine Specific engine if it is Chrysler LA Small block based.

The reason is the ad says they are Chrysler 460's with 545ft/lbs of torque I looked at the marine 460 ford and the dizzy, intake, and the water neck look the same. I also believe that two 360 Chrysler wouldn't have enough oomph to get this 22,000 pound boat to its top speed of 28 knots and I know that Chrysler never made a 460 CI engine as far as I know but Ford DID ?
Those two pictures ARE of two different engines because it is a twin engine sportfish boat. and it is a Straight drive and not a v-drive inboard. so you are looking at the front of the engines in the pictures.
Thanks for the replies guys !

Well, one of them has a Chrysler electronic ignition amplifier on it for whatever reason, and one just has the same bracket with nothing on it, but both have the flame arrestor hat from a Chrysler 340. I think I would pass.
