chrysler 45 HP trouble

Have a 79 chrysler 45 HP, problem is that it is having trouble going in reverse and slips out of gear when going at high speeds? any help apreciated.

Best place to start is with the linkage. Do you have a manual? If not, go to your library and see if they have a Chrysler outboard manual. There are always manuals for sale on ebay. I think the Seloc is the best. It's hard for me to explain how to do the linkage adjustment here. That's where I'd start.

If the motor wont go into reverse and is slipping in forward gear chances are your gears and clutch are worn. The bad news is the parts are no longer availible. The good news is if the faces on the gears and clutch arent to bad they can be refaced by a machinist. Get the manual as scotiany mentioned. The forward gear could be a spun prop but it is unlikely. Take a permanant magic marker and draw a straight line on the prop to the prop cone. When motor jumps out of gear at high speed see if the line still lines up to the cone and prop. <br />Keep an eye out on ebay for lower units for a 55HP, 45Hp and 35HP. YOu might get lucky and find one with good gears<br /><br /> Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I do have a manual and will check the linkage adjustments. what would you rate the difficulty level to pull the lower unit and rebuild/resurface? by a lighter/moderate tinkerer? I just missed a 45 HP on ebay going for low cost should have moved faster!

I have gotten burned on five lower units on ebay. Always lost them in the last 15 seconds. Difficulty is not bad with a manual. The tricky part is finding a machinist to do the work. Around here the project is too small for most to be interested in doing it. If you can find someone who does this stuff out of their garage that is usually best.<br /><br />Here is a link for a place that might have the seal kit you need. <br /> Chrysler parts <br />I know you can buy a seal kit from mercury however the spare kit I have is packed because I am moving. The other part you need is a gasket that goes between the upper and lower pieces of the lower unit. I can cut you a copy out of gasket paper. I have a spare original gasket.<br /><br />Another thing. Taking the bearing cage off that motor can be a chore without a puller. It can be done but is a pain. Also the seal in the bearing cage is a tough one to get out. I found combination pliers to work the best<br /><br />Good luck

Eurolarva, if I can get a copy of that gasket that would be great. I will go on that chrysler parts guy and see if I can get what I need. We took it out today and can definatly tell its not working right when it shifts it is real noisey. Thanks for all the info you guys gave I may need to call upon again when I start getting into it. I proboably will have to wait awhile to get into it. thks
