just given a 1974 boat w/a chrysler 318 LM 318 BTLXI 681. I believe the motor is shot, not winterized and milk 8 inches up the dipstick. So for me it is a foregone conclusion I will replace the engine. I did find some information on the engine and can not decifer if this is a standard rotation or reverse rotation engine, it is a single I/O boat. Can anyone take the model number above and tell me if it is standard or not? if it is I presume that i can use the crank and cam in a "regular block to make the reverse rotation if that is what it is. Thanks

Ayuh,....

Basically speaking,... Single engine applications use Standard(lefthand) rotation motors...

What Outdrive is hanging off the back,..??

I would assume it would be the original, it says chrysler 274. There is no documentation with the boat. And thanks again.

engine is locked up tighter than cooter brown

Ayuh,...

Then the Best thing you can do is Part it out,+ transplant a Volvo or Mercruiser into the hull, if it's worth Saving.....

Chrysler has been out of the Marine power business for Way too many years,...
There are somewhere between Few,+ No parts available for them.....
The motor isn't so much of a Problem as the Drives...

i decided to pull the intake and heads off and found oil and water in the cylinders, explain the locked up due to hydraulic theory. heads looked ok block looked ok but there must have been 5 gallons of oil and water in the engine. now question is replace engine only or refit the drive unit as well.

Re: Chrysler 318 info needed

yes, thank you for the information. what I should have said to qualify the statement is if it is feesable (economically), or even possible (which I am sure it is) or practicle to convert it to a late model chevy or ford with a corresponding drive unit. If the price is going to be say 5,000, I would assume to rebuild the motor as inexpensively as possible, and use the boat for a couple years and get something different in a few years.

Ayuh,...

I've refitted several classic hulls,...

The most Economical way to go is to buy a Donor boat with the drveline you want in it, Running,...
Then junk it out for the parts....

Buying a New driveline, along with all the little pieces necessary, will drive the costs to the Moon...
