Ahoy mates,

I am trying to hook up a 1985 chrysler alternator on my boat. I am having problems trying to figure out where the wires all go. I have this diagram... Please look. www.mopar1.us/charge.html

I have a 70's type voltage regulator. There are 2 wires. One Blue and one green. I think the blue will go to the ignition.

The problem I am having is this. On the alternator there are 4 places to connect wires. 1 for the battery, 2 flds and one ground. Niether flds are marked - or +.

According to the diagram I should run the positive fld to the blue wire on the voltage regulator and it should also run to the ignition switch. The - fld should run to the green wire on the voltage reguator. And the battery post on the alternator should run to the battery.

My problem is this. Niether of the flds say - or +. Also the diagram does not have a ground connection on the alternator.

So I have no idea which flds to connect to the blue or green wire on the voltage regulator as I do not know which is + or -. Also I thaught the whole unit was grounded from the voltage regulator.

I am also not sure if the battery post on the alternator should run to the + or - side of the battery. I am guessing the +.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Paul

Re: Chrysler 318 alternator wiring help

well you probably wouldnt agree to alot of whatweve done.but the alterntor wason the old engine.the only reson i dont know where the wires go is because i had one of my helpers take the engine out when i gotit.he paid no mind to what he did he just took everyhing appart. any way im not to familiar with chrysler.but ive had 140hp. mercruiser which is basicly a153 chey chevette egine.i used a starter and alternator both fromthe chevette with no prblem.much cheaper too.never had afire and know plenty of people that do the same.the only way thatthat creates a problem is if you have no common sense .we take care of our boat 4 blowers allnew everything from tanks to the motor it wont pose any hazards to us beleive me.besdes allthat.do you honestly beleive a marine alternator or starter is any diffrent thanatomotive?if so then why do drive everyday.you have the same risk of firesor anything else.and if it will work the same and its.cheaper the whats the problem.it mounts up there so it will work.thanks anyway

Who's got that animated picture of the burning boat handy??

Thecol, sounds like you've got it all figured out. When that fuel leak happens while you're under way, after your 4 blowers have run, and your unshielded automotive electrical system blows you out of the water, I just hope you don't take anyone else with you.

Since you don't care about safety, are you aware of the fines and/or other penalties if the coast guard inspects you and finds out what you're running?

do you honestly beleive a marine alternator or starter is any diffrent thanatomotive?
Um, yes. Electrically sheilded to prevent ignition of fuel vapors in a closed environment.

all new everything from tanks to the motor
...but you're too cheap to spring the extra couple hundred bucks for marine electronincs?

that creates a problem is if you have no common sense
sounds like you would know..........

Re: Chrysler 318 alternator wiring help

I BET YOU THE PICTURES YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT AREALL MARINE ENGINES SO EXPLAIN HOW THEY CAUGHT FIRE THE SAME WAY A CAR WOULD.I DONT CLAIM TO BE AN EXPERT BUT I KNOW MANY PEOPLE THAT DO THIS NOT TO MANY CHRYSLERS THOUGH.THEY MAY BE ILLEGAL WHERE YOU ARE BUT IN VA I DONT BELEIVE SO MOST OF MY FREINDS BOATS ARE COASTGAUD INSPECTED AND APPROVED.SO IF YOU DONT AGREE FINE .DONT HELP ME OUT .ILLFIND ASAFE WAY.EVENTUALY ILL GET THE MARINE ALTERNATOR ANYWAY JUST SO THERES NO EXTERNAL REGULATO.WE JUST WANT TO GO CHECK THE BOAT OUT AND SEE HOW IT DOES.AND LIKE I SAID THE ALTERNATOR WAS ALLREADY ON MOTOR SO IT WILL WORK.I UNDERSTAND YOUR POINT.ABOUT THE SAFETY OF OTHERS.JUST SO YOU KNOW IVE WORKED WATERS FOR OVER 5 YEARS AND THERS MANY PEOPLE DOING THIS.SO IT MUST NOT BE AS BAD AS YOU MAKE IT SOUND.

I'm not trying to give you a hard time. Will it work? Yes. Is there a good change you'll never have a problem? Yes. Is it more likely that if there is a problem, it will be catastrophic? Yes.

USCG is a federal agency. Does not matter what state you're in.
