I have a 1975 chrysler 25hp 257HA with the battery ignition and the stator alternator. The external coils are on top of the head. I’m doing a cosmetic restoration on this nice engine and want to get new coils because the old ones are from who knows what and the wiring someone done is terrible! My question is do i need the 12v coils without a built in resistor or do i need the ones with the built in resistor? I don’t see a resistor on the powerhead anywhere but I’m new to these non magneto models. Thank you!

You need non resistor coils.
OEM or aftermarket coils are expensive, Mastertech Marine have them BUT 133 dollar each.
Try Ebay, auto style coils are a solution or motorcycle coils with battery feed ignition.

Is there a wire from solenoid going to the coils ???-----Amazon has coils for $20 or so.----Install some and test run.

The coils are fed from the terminal stripe 12 volt plus and the minus side of the coils goes to the points and condensers.
The 12 volt at terminal stripe are hot when ignition switch is in RUN and START position.

If there is a wire from solenoid to one terminal on a coil it is likely a coil with internal resistor.----Measure voltage at the coil with ignition turned to " on " and that will tell you the story.
