Greetings everyone!

This last year I finished restoring a 1983 Smoker Craft 14' V-hull for my middle son...as he gets older he will need a boat for his fishing :)

I found a good deal on a tiller 35 HP Chrysler and we took it out for a test run a while back. It started fine in the garbage can of water and then out on the river it ran fine. We were bringing it back in before sunset and I came up shallow on some sand causing the motor kick up out of the water. I restarted it and we proceeded to the ramp and trailered the boat. The next week I took my youngest with us and it wouldn't start - I had shredded the pinion gear; I guess I hadn't taken it out of neutral when I restarted it off the sandbar.

The long and short is I replaced the pinion gear and the pull return is fine (I remembered not to let the spring fly loose when pulling the gear  ) but now I can't get it started. As far as I can tell the flywheel is not "spinning" as freely as it should and I am wondering if it might be in gear, even though the lever indicates neutral.

I am not familiar enough with the linkage for an outboard to say what I should be looking for with the flywheel and how "free" it should be turning but I do know it is VERY tight/hard on the pull when I try to start it.

If anyone has ideas, suggestions or wants to just have a laugh at my expense I would appreciate anything you can offer. I am just tired of telling my two youngest sons we can't go out because their dad can't fix a perfectly good motor

Thanks in advance!

What year model is your 35hp Chrysler? I have a 1970 35hp Chrysler and I have two locations I would try to disengage my 35?s lower shift rod or lower unit from the flywheel?s drive shaft. I?ll show attachments related to both.

1. At the coupling on the leg that with will require starting equally to re-center shift rod to get F-N-R.

2. At the cotter pin where the L/U bolts on is my choice if the motor is shifting fine + access to impeller. I use a longer bolt/nut while working cotter pin..

Thank you for the response! My motor is a 1982. When I get back to the house I will post pictures if that would help. I see what you are describing with the pin...I may start there.

Thanks again!
