Greetings everyone!
This last year I finished restoring a 1983 Smoker Craft 14' V-hull for my middle son...as he gets older he will need a boat for his fishing
I found a good deal on a tiller 35 HP Chrysler and we took it out for a test run a while back. It started fine in the garbage can of water and then out on the river it ran fine. We were bringing it back in before sunset and I came up shallow on some sand causing the motor kick up out of the water. I restarted it and we proceeded to the ramp and trailered the boat. The next week I took my youngest with us and it wouldn't start - I had shredded the pinion gear; I guess I hadn't taken it out of neutral when I restarted it off the sandbar.
The long and short is I replaced the pinion gear and the pull return is fine (I remembered not to let the spring fly loose when pulling the gear ) but now I can't get it started. As far as I can tell the flywheel is not "spinning" as freely as it should and I am wondering if it might be in gear, even though the lever indicates neutral.
I am not familiar enough with the linkage for an outboard to say what I should be looking for with the flywheel and how "free" it should be turning but I do know it is VERY tight/hard on the pull when I try to start it.
If anyone has ideas, suggestions or wants to just have a laugh at my expense I would appreciate anything you can offer. I am just tired of telling my two youngest sons we can't go out because their dad can't fix a perfectly good motor
Thanks in advance!
