g'day all. Hoping anyone can help with my problem. i have a 105hp chrysler ptt around late 60 to early 70 mod. the engine has been running abnormally hot whilst running - after 1 min of running the head is too hot to touch. i have removed the leg and inspected the impellor, checked the thermostat with no avail. engine compression is still very good. i installed a telltale pipe to the top of the thermostat housing and the water just dribbles out through the tube. The only idea i have is that there is a leak in the pipe running from the pump to the engine. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Mattyhylander,
Is water coming out of the pee hole? I had a similar problem with an 1986 Evinrude 225 and like you, changed t/s, tested the temp senders, checked the engine temperature with a heat gun and nothing. After some more troubleshooting found a "kink" on the brass water tube that carries the water from the water pump to the engine. I was lucky enough that I could reach the bend and opened the kink up with a long flat
tip screwdriver. Jsut a thought, good luck.

USMCMSGT

the water is dribbling out, not much at all. water is getting to the cylinders but not enough, not a good strong flow from the hole like there should be.

Re: chrysler 105hp heat problem

Mattyhylander,
I had the same problem, not enough water coming thru at low rpm's, once above 600 rpm's it was no problem the overheat alarm would shut off. Because of the kink on the lower portion of the water tube, when the engine was at iddle there was not enough presure to "force" water up the tube, but once the engine started climbing rpm's there was enough pressure (impeller moving faster) to send the water up. So you may want to inspect your water tube, it's worth a try. Good luck

USMCMSGT :)

mattyhylander, Did you change the waterpump impeller or just inspect it?They can appear fine but not flexing tight enough against housing sleeve alllowing pressure slippage.I would recommend rebuilding waterpump along with inspecting discharge tube for obstruction or kink .

Re: chrysler 105hp heat problem

i removed the leg and the tube or motor are not obstructed as a hose over the tube flows water through the motor. i didn't replace the waterpump just inspected it. closer inspection now sees the housing which the impellor rotates in to be pitted and corroded. maybe as you say the seal is not good enough giving only a low pressure. i also noticed a small hole in the housing allowing water to drain from the pump. is this to drain the motor of water to prevent corrosion or maybee a corrosion hole itself?

Most outboards will have a way for water to drain when not running so that in cold climates freezing is not a concern.
