My motor year is 1978 and online there is a motor of 1976. I want to know if there are a big difference between 1976 and 1978. I want to buy the 1976 as a spare parts

Also can the propeller of 1976 be used in my boat of 1978?

Thank you

I think the powerhead is the same. The Lower unit completely different, and the props do not interchange.

The different is the 1976 has a 2 piece gearcase and the 1978 has a 1 piece.
Sorry but do not know if they are interchangeable. Know that you can put the 76 engine block to the 78 leg/gearcase and vice versa.
Frank A, who knew all of this has unfortunately passed through.

1976 has a beltdriven distributor Magnapower Motorola ignition. The 1978 may have the Magnapower II ignition.
These two ignition system are way different.

The 76 prop will not fit the 78, I have an older with the two piece leg. My block is cracked, but Frank told me that I could use a 1994 or older force motor and my cowling would swap. The two piece leg is a larger drag then the one piece

boatsdotnet. Mercury Motors. two sections to choose from.
Use the top and open the Chrysler tab and you can find the 76 there,
Open it it in 2 windows and you can compare the 76 to the 78.
