What year is it? If you don't know, post a photo showing the lower unit and propeller. Ahh--post a photo anyway.

When you changed the waterimpeller, did the old one had any cracks, pieces of vans away? Maybe pieces of the old one are stucked in the watertub or in the waterjacket in the powerhead. Try to flush with water/compressed air.
I think that your engine have a waterpressure relief valve. It is located under a cover on the exhaustplate. If it is stuck the engine can overheat at high rpms. It can be really hard two fix it. The bolts that hold the cover can "snap off". It is very common on old engines that has been i salt water that the valvespring stucks and the bolts snaps.

Exactly! The 1974 models had a water pressure relief vlave located under a diamond shaped plate held on by two 5/16 head hex bolts. It is located in the dog-leg of the exhaust cover. If it is stuck open, most water will bypass the block and go right back down the leg. Like Nordin also said, you are likely to snap those bolts so be ready to drill and retap.

thanks guys, sounds like you have both hit on the solution, a silly question maybe, but should it still run on slow revs ? also , to get to it i guess i take the cover off on leg where water spout is (6 outside bolts and 6 bolts inside cover), terry

No, you don't need to take off the rear cover, but you MAY need to unbolt and raise the lower cover. You can see the bypass right below and next to the terminal strip. Be very careful, those two bolts regularly snap and then it is a major job with much cursing and swearing to drill and tap them.

thanks frank and nordin, found the valve cover, took out the 2 bolts (they came out with no problem,, this motor apears to be previosly well maitained)NOW 2 new problems, the cover wont come off for me to check/replace valve, have tried tapping it but am not sure if i should give it a bloody good wack to try to knock it off??.... also tried to start it (always started pretty easy) and killed 2 batteries before it backfired (BIG BACKFIRE, got a call from the bomb squad 500 miles away, lol) and started, this motor is pissing me off but am determined to get it going right, more advice please guys. terry

There is a paper washer under the diamond shaped plate and it is probably glued on. Try prying under one or both ears with something sharp like a chisel but don't force it enough to break the ears. It also may have corrosion inside and you may have some luck by tapping and twisting the ears first one way then the other to break the corrosion.

Once you have removed it (the diamond shaped plate) chamfer the edge of the hole with a countersink just enough to allow a 1/16 thick O ring to set into it and seal.---works better. After cleaning bith the hole and metal plug to bare metal, coat the plug and hole with anti-seize or vaseline to help prevent more corrosion.

Can someone post a photo or diagram of what cover to remove and where the two bolts are?
