(1980 Citation W/ a 120 mercruiser I/O) i have come to find out that I need a new starter and was wondering if i should by a compatible automotive starter or by the marine version. I know that the marine version is sealed so that it wont spark... but is that all i need to know?

DO NOT use an automotive starter.
Marine starters are sprark protected, automotive isn't and doesn't have the Coast Guard seal of approveal for marine use.
Same goes with alternators, distributors, fuel pumps, carbs............
Know before you buy automotive.

What else do you need to know? One can blow up your family, one can't. It's a no brainer.

If your starter can be rebuilt it is likely to be cheaper than new.

Kevin

Do just as Don and rubber said, don't buy the auto starter. It isn't worth killing someone because you skimped some money on a starter. If nothing else it would probly last longer if you buy the marine one.
We don't mean to be hateful about things that concern safety, we just don't want someone hurt because of a safety issue that could easily be avoided.
