I have a mercury 50hp 1982. When the key is left on but not running black lava leaks out of the choke solenoid. When it cools it turns to a rubber like puddle that I can pick up and throw away. What is leaking and does that mean I need a new solenoid? The plungers plastic connector broke so im going to replace it. Closest boat srore is 20 miles away and have already been 3 times in the last week for other projects.

Sounds like you have a wiring problem. Power should only go to the choke solenoid, when you are actively choking the motor. Fixing that issue might eliminate the problem. Could you post a picture?

My key is stuck. Maybe that is the problem? I disconnected the solenoid and engine runs good with the exception of after replacing all the lower unit and putting it back it wont go into forward or reverse. Im not sure how to post pics here.
