Choke Question

I have a 1974 Evinrude 135hp outboard that I have recently rebuilt the carbs and installed a new fuel pump. After putting the boat in the water it ran fine for a while and then I had a hard time at WOT. I noticed the plunger in my choke assembly keeps coming out to far and ends up mostly out and diagonal instead of vertical. Are you suppose to be able to pull the plunger straight out? Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Choke Question

Are you talking about a manual choke or does your engine have a primer solenoid? You may have reinstalled a linkage wrong when you put it back on.

yes the plunger will come out - it's not fastened in, if that's what you mean. not sure your model...is it connected to the linkage by a spring? if so you should be able to squeeze it a little to tighten it around the plunger and maybe lengthen it a bit...just work with it to where the choke plates are full open at rest and fully closed when deployed.

Also note that the choke plates are held open by a spring on the carb linkage, probably just one of the carbs has it.

Thanks, I will try that tonight.

OK, the front plates are fully closed at rest, but open completely at WOT. This sounds right, but it's opposite of what you wrote above. Which way is right?

Re: Choke Question

sorry, I didn't articulate that very well...when you push the key in on a cold start, the choke plates should close. All other times they should be open (horizontal).

Please describe "hard time at WOT" - what happens when you give it full throttle? Does it start and idle good?

It starts and idles fine. I just have what seems to be mid-throttle performance when I'm at WOT. There doesn't seem to be any miss or any other noticeable problem. Actually, the engine is running quite smooth.

Re: Choke Question

The choke solenoid should be adjusted so that the tip of the widest part of the plunger, when the choke is in the closed position, is just flush with the entrance hole of the solenoid.

It sounds like you have it incorrectly adjusted.

Thank you. I will double check that adjustment tonight.
