this may be similar to a post I read before, but a friend has a mid 90's 5 hp johnson. The motor will start on first pull with choke pulled out and will run fairly well at around half choke. With the choke pushed all the way in it will usually die, but sometimes idle, it will die if any throttle is given. I think the carb just needs cleaning. He said it ran fine last year, but left the gas in it all winter and it did have the stay-bil or whatever that stuff is called mixed in it. Will a spray can of carb cleaner do the trick if sprayed in all the jets and ports, and left to sit for a few. Whould there be anything Im overlooking?

In agreement with Tash. Clean and rebuild that carburetor.

100% agree. the motor is runnig better with less air b/c there is to not enough fuel getting to the motor. buy a manual and perform a good cleaning.
