How do I know if my choke is working properly? I have a 90' Evinrude 60 hp. Tracker motor. I have been having a little trouble starting it lately. I pump the bulb to prime it. Then I hold the choke in (push key in) about 8 sec. then turn ingition. Most of the time it just turns over but does not start until I take the cover off the carb. ports and put my hands over the carb. port holes. I have tried the manual choke(red lever) and it does not help. Should I be able to look into the carb. port holes and see the choke working when I work the manual choke? After the motor runs for a while, it starts just fine.

Loveto....wasn't you having this trouble before? Seems I read a similar post. Here's something to try....

Remove the primer hose from the top carb cause it's the easiest to get to. Put the hose in a container. Pump up the primer and have someone crank the engine. You should have gas spurting out the primer hose. This would indicate the primer is working.

If not, maybe the primer solenoid is in need of replacement. Check to see if you are getting 12volts to the solenoid when the key is pushed in. You can read this right at the solenoid where the purble/white wires meet.

I would surmise that you are haveing problems with the primer since when you put your hand over the mouth of the carb, she will start. This is doing what the carb choke plates did. Cut most of the air supply off and "suck" the gas up from the bowl to get the engine started.

Keep us posted as to what you find....thanks!

OBJ fordet to say that the choke button needs to be pushed while cranking.

Clean the primer hose nipple, It will have the same gunk as a dirty carb.

Well,
The primer solenoid is clicking when the key is pushed in. I pulled the hose off the top carb. and held it into a container. My wife turned the ignition while pushing the key in to choke. I got a nice spurt of gas thru the hose every time she would push the choke in. BUT, the thing still won't start without me cutting off the air to the carb with my hands. WEIRD! Any other suggestions for me to check. One thing that I noticed is the gasket around the plate that covers the carbs is not sealing at the bottom. Could this play a role in my problem?

LOVETO, The starting proceedure is to push the key in while CRANKING the engine (sorry if I yelled ) What spurts of gas you see with the hoses off are the result of pressure in the system, from pumping the primer bulb.
When you push the key in,when cranking (I'm getting better),a valve opens, and the action of the pistons going up and down causes fuel to spray into the system, and let the system start.
You can push the key in for ever, but without the engine cranking, very little gas gets to the motor.
DHP

We were cranking the engine while pushing the key in. She was turning over nicely and every few seconds I'd tell my wife to push the key in. Gas would spurt out the hose,so I guess that kills my bad primer solenoid theory. Also, after holding my hands over the ports and starting the motor, I pushed the key to choke it and she died.

Re: Choke problem on 60 hp. Evinrude?

Hey Guys,

Just a clarification here, and It might help Loveto. When I start my 48 spl with the key switch I turn it to the on position and choke it by pushing it in several times which I'm thinking is spurting gas in each time I push it in then I turn the key to the start position. Then if it tries to kill I will push it in again and you can hear the rpm pick up again until it warms up.

I was not aware that it was pouring in fuel the whole time the key was pushed it, I though it squirted fuel each time it was pushed in.

Would someone clairify this.

Hope this helps,
Beck
