Choke popping up and jamming throttle. ('85 30hp seahorse)

i've got a 30hp '85 Johnson Sea-Horse.

the screw that holds the choke lever broke the other day so i opened the case and put in another screw and cleaned it out. now the choke keeps popping up and jamming the throttle when i move through idle. it seems the little plastic notch on the small plastic piece on the choke side of the case doesn't want to disengage itself from the larger plastic piece on the throttle side of the case.
if i move from forward to reverse, it pushes the choke up when it reaches idle and i have to push the choke down and hold it in order to get into reverse...and vice versa.
any idea what's causing this?

every motor is different, the directions for your particular motor is in the johnson service manual for your motor.

i opened up the throttle box and the warm up lever is stripped and a couple metal parts are bent. i'm wondering if i can just bypass the warm-up mechanism and rig it so i can operate the throttle without it?
or, where can i find a reasonably priced throttle to replace it and what features would i need? and are they fairly easy to install?
