I have a 2001 Nissan 18HP 4 stroke. There appears to be no choke action. When cold it cranks and cranks but won't fire. If I use starting fluid it starts immediately and will continue to start all day long. The remote has wires for the choke but they aren't hooked upto anything. The choke solinoid has 2 red wires which seem to go to the ECM according to the wiring diagram. Does this thing have an automatic choke and if so why does it not start? I was afraid to probe the 2 wires at the choke solinoid in fear of damaging the ECM.

That's the problem I'm trying to solve. The choke wires are there (at the key controls) but they aren't connected to anything.

The engine has a feature that self chokes when it needs to....So there's nothing to choke.

Re: choke-nissan 18, 4 stroke

I just recently had a similar problem with my 18hp 4-stroke purchased last year. Turned out the marina replaced the, "Bi-starter". Its a small white unit with two wires on the carb. It pretty much does the same thing as an automatic chock, in that it controls fuel and air to allow the engine to run when cold. My engine seems to run fine now, and will start and idle. Hope this helps....
