Chinwalker,
I just got back from fishing the 1000 island.
A group of us go up about 2 times a year for 5days at a time.I grew up in Ft. Covington and work construction in mass now.
What a am wondering is if you know of any walleye spots in that area.
We have never fished for them before and would like to spend a couple of days doing so when we go up.
We stay at krings point and one of the neighbors there said between goose bay and chippiwaa, there is an island, right of the channel (i forgot the name of it) with cliff walls. He said there was a large boat sunk there and divers claim the area is full of walleye. Have you heard of this?
Thanks for any info.
The st.lawrence is one awesome river!!!
David

Hi David,
Sorry, but I'm not much of a fisherman anymore. I occasionally see a nice pike or two in my bay, but I haven't chased one with a fake fish in 20 years... I never did fish for Walleye....
- Scott

Sounds like they're talking about Ironsides. If you fish the side facing the main channel it's deep. I didn't know there was a ship sunk there. I've never caught any Walleye but you never know. Buy a chart if your going over there. A submerged rock at one end got me a few years ago. I've been going up there to vacation for 30 years on and off. I knew the stupid thing was there, and hit it anyway. That little momentary laps of awareness made for an expensive vacation.

Yeah kooler,
Rocks and shoals every place an the river.
Last year three of us(seperate boats) in single file almost ran into the rock wall coming out of lake of the isles, trying to get on the main channel. We were hanging the right coming out .....should have kept going strait and to the left.
I meet the fella at southeastern part of goose bay, he was telling me about that island......suppose to be loaded with walleye.

I've never gone in there. But I was checking it out on my chart last year and I'm going to give it a try next time up. How did you do while you were in there? You have me curious about the Walleyes now too.

I have never fished for walleye before....thats why i would like to get into it.I really need someone to show me how.
I was only fishing for northerns. We did really well.....some in the 36"+ range. I caught a couple small muskies in lake of the isle.
I have been trying to get our group to go up the end of june so we could fish for all species.
I think that sunk boat would be a good area to check out when you go up there. We didnt have a chance too because of strong winds the last two days we were there......4' waves in the channel.
Let me know when you go up there.

I've never fished for Walleye either, but I'd like to give it a try. I hear they're great eating. I haven't caught a Northern over 28" for the last few years up there, 36" is a nice fish. I hooked into a nice one last year and got it along side the boat, but I didn't have a net. It jumped the hook before I could land it. That one may have been 32/34", hard to say. The past few years we've been catching a lot of fish, but it seems like both the Pike and the Bass have been running small. Zebra muscles? We go up the last week of August every year.

Sounds like Ironsides to me as well. I have a good friend that owns a cottage facing West overlooking Ironsides. There is a shoal on the east side of the island that gets boater every year. We wedged an American flag in the shoal to caution boaters, but accidents still happen. Great fishing there though.

What side of the island is the ship wreck? What kind of ship?

The only walleye I have ever caught was in the channel getting out of Lake of The Isles on the Alex Bay side. I have been told by locals that the big bay off Cape Vincent is excellent for walleyes in the spring. I have never fished that close to Lake Ontario. Make sure and check the Ontario fishing regs and boat equipment requirements when you are there.

Re: chinewalker.......1000 island fishing

I tried a jigging spoon off Ironsides in the deep stuff, and tried dropping some live bait. No Walleye this year. We only went over there twice for about an hour and a half each time. I'll try it again next year. We got a bunch of Smallies this year, 16 1/2 was the biggest. They were all super fat and healthy, good-looking fish. Also, the first time in 25 years of fishing up there I caught a Drum. I didn't have a scale on the boat but I would estimate it at around 15 lbs. Awesome fight, it took close to 5minutes to land. The thing just kept taking line. When it was close enough to the surface to see the color I though it was going to be a record Smallie. Got it up a little further and the shape wasn't right. Got it in the boat and I told my wife, "If this was salt water I would say that’s a drum." We snapped picture and brought it to the 1000 Island bait shop for an ID, they "It's a Drum." I didn't know Drum were in fresh water. Awesome vacation, fishing is always good up there.

No, dogfish is different. We have one of those we always see hanging around in the cove by our cottages. There's another name for the dogfish but I can't think of it right now. Hit Images and type "Freshwater Drum" into Google and you can get a picture. I'd post a pic but I don't know how either. Nice Smallies. I've been over to Goose Bay for Pike but I didn't get over there this year. Where did you catch the bass, at the inlet, further in? We were mostly drop shotting crayfish in deeper water for the Smallies this year. We caught allot of fish, but none were 6 lbs. Did you get the largemouth in there also?

Re: chinewalker.......1000 island fishing

I caught the smallie way to the back side (south end) more on the kring point camp ground side, in front of that old run down camp. All those shoals there hold alot of bass.
We picked up some nice northerns out of the inlet and to the west.Last year i caught a 38" northern out at chippawua bay around the first islands at the inlet towards the east side.
The large mouths i caught locally here in central mass.
I was with a buddy of mine .....both times on his boat....it was funny ....the second one i caught(7lb)...he was happy for me but swearing at the same time.

Re: chinewalker.......1000 island fishing

I have to get back in there next year; I've never really fished it for bass. Just dragged spinner baits through the weeds for pike. I've fished around Chippewa Bay a little, but I've never pulled anything memorable out there. I've heard allot of big pike stories from people that say I need to fish in front of that big house on St. Margaretes Island first thing in the morning. The problem is, every time I go over there is already a boat there. And I think it's always the same guy, he must pay rent there.
