Re: Chickens?

Urban chicks can cause you problems. Consult your local urban laws concerning chicks before ordering...

Re: Chickens?

That silly "news" report was just that, silly.

People that don't wash their food, cook their food, or prevent cross contamination, have and always will get sick.
I worry more about the restaurant prepared meal, prepped by $5 an hour high school kids.

We had 5 or 6 layers for 5 years.
Not worth the effort any more with just me in the house.
Seriously thinking of picking up 30 or so Cornish Rock Broilers for the freezer.
They grow fast and would be in the freezer within 8 weeks.

I don't have any here, but have several friends with them. Nashville just opened up where you can have chickens in the city.

If you've got the space to set up a roost for them, and can let them otherwise free range, they're not too difficult.

I had 4 layers for a couple years. I enjoyed having them. Nothing like fresh eggs. I would let mine roam the yard during the day. Two of them would follow me around like dogs. LOL. They did become "pets". Just make sure you secure their space to keep predators away.

Re: Chickens?

I have had chickens for years. I have 2 left that are 6 years old and am trying to find a home for them. Just be prepared for the fact that after a few years, they don't lay as much anymore and the food costs is WAY more than what you will ever get in eggs.

Re: Chickens?

This is my coop. The coop is an 8' x 8' shed where half of it is the roosting and egg laying boxes and the other half is food storage and a 40 Gallon water tank which feeds the automatic waterer.

The pen area has railroad ties dug under he ground for the perimeter that the pen sits on so nothing can dig under it.

This is when they were first old enough to go into the coop

Re: Chickens?

yep we have 14 layers. this is our second time doing chicks. had them before we went to FL and upon moving back here, t hat was her first request....more birds.

first thing I learned was you build the coop to keep everything out not the chickens in. up here we have to put heat lamps in to keep them warm in the winter. They are fun to have, if you want good eggs go for Rhode Island red or Buff orpingtons. excellent large eggs. Black silk lace were good as well.

not sure what breed we have now but they lay smallish eggs. still good but nothing monstrous.

we usually sell the extras to pay for feed for them.

as for the coop, border goes under ground to prevent digging, mesh over the top to prevent hawks, netting up to roof of coop to prevent raccoons climbing in,shed.jpg
