How big of a rig are you guys pulling with the Trailblazer? I am thinking about getting a 22 foot center console and i was wondering if this is powerful enough to get it around. According to the Specs at chevy it can pull up to 6400lbs. The boat would probably be around 4000 with trailer. What do ya think?

Re: Chevy Trailblazer

a little more info please. year of trailblazer, engine. how far are you planning on towing it. down the street to the ramp, or from jersey to florida? i pull 16 & 18 footers with a Mercury Mariner 2.3L 4cyl (same as Ford Escape) at 65mph (cruise control) just did an 800 mile trip pulling the 16. Fla to Charlotte NC and back. if i were going to go thru the mountains, i would want a 6 cyl.

Re: Chevy Trailblazer

also with that load i HIGHLY recommend trailer brakes. if your trailer doesn't have them they are available at chanpion trailers.com. not bad to install. after being push thru several quick changing red lights i installed the on my heavier boats. was driving F250 back then.

It should work fine (I used to sell them). Stay away drom the OD and the only drawback is your lack of width to see around the boat.

If you have a sttandard Trailblazer the I-6 has 275 hp and the v-8 has more.

I am an advocate of trailer brakes too but on a boat yoursize I am sure you have them.

Re: Chevy Trailblazer

Its the shorter wheelbase LS model with the I-6 275hp. i will be pulling it as close as 10 miles and as long as 250. I just don't want to overstress the vehicle to the point where its only gonna last a year or two. The boat will definetely have brakes. Thanks for the info so far!

Re: Chevy Trailblazer

Of importance is the axle ratio. TrailBlazers were generally delivered with 3.42:1 axles. 3.73:1 and 4.10:1 were also available and far better (and required for 6000#). You should be ok with the 3.42:1 at 4000 but by all means stay out of overdrive. You might try it on the flat with no headwind to see if the torque converter frequently locks/unlocks, or it hunts between OD and direct. If either of those occurs, get out of OD.

Re: Chevy Trailblazer

I used my trailblazer to pull my 19' bayliner cuddy and it had no problem. The boat was old, waterlogged, and fully loaded with fuel, supplies, water, etc. You should be fine.

Re: Chevy Trailblazer

I used a 2002 TrailBlazer, I-6, 3.42 axle, to pull 5000 lb (boat + trailer) about 500 miles. I kept it out of OD, and always felt like it had plenty of power, but then again, I didn't encounter any really steep grades. I would think you'd be in good shape at 4000 lb.

However, I would make sure that you have the proper tongue weight. My tongue weight was too low and there was a bit more sway and porpoise than I was comfortable with. I've since increased the tongue wt and the handling is much better.

Re: Chevy Trailblazer

I've had an 03 and 05 trial Blazer, I'm in sales and drive about 50,000 miles a year. They tow OK, but I wouldn't want to tow anything near the 6,000 rating. I tow three different boats and some other trailers, I have a 19' CC that is about all it will tow comfortably, yes it will tow more, but I think you may run out of power before you hit 6'000lbs with the I6. With the 19'cc I get about 11 miles per gallon, less if there are hills. The 03 had about a 16 gallon tank so you didn't get far between fill ups, the 05 has a 20. It will tow the 22'cc, but you will deffinitely know it's there.
