I have an 350 chevy engine that i was told runs great but seems to have alot of crank play. Does anyone know how much the crank pulley should move in and out. Would a 1/8" to 1/4" sound ok.

around .001 to .002 inches is normal, not .125 to .250.
Sounds like someone put it together without the thrust bearings.

the guy i bought it from said it will run for lots of years to come , guess not. I'll measure it after work and get back with the info. I just spent alot of time on putting this engine in to have it be junk:mad:

He also said the bottom end has never been apart so maybe its in need of a bad bearing rebuild

Just check the engine and with the outdrive and the belts on the engine i dont have any play at all that i can see.

It had the play when the engine had nothing on it just the damper and flywheel and it was more like an 1/8" but thats still bad. Maybe with this stuff on the engine now it will keep the crank from going back and forward as easy

I would think your oil pressure would fluctuate depending on load at a given rpm. That should also give a indication as to the condition of the motor.

typically crankshaft endplay is in the .003 to .008 range.
its controled by the last bearing aft on that engine and is called the thrust bearing. most likly its wiped out.
