A big vacuum leak will do that also. If you can get somebody to work the throttle and keep it running at a lowish RPM, spray WD-40 or carb cleaner all around the intake manifold gaskets and every hose/connection to the intake manifold, base of carb gasket, etc. If the WD-40 gets sucked in somewhere you'll hear a very noticeable change in the engine's idle.
