Re: cherry picker

usually in a regular house garage you can use a cherry picker if you raise the tongue up to lower the stern and gain a little more clearance

Re: cherry picker

Interesting, in my field of endeavor a cherry picker is another name for a bucket truck, like the kind used to fix street lights or traffic signals. Guess ya never stop learning. :)

Re: cherry picker

Called a tow truck once , I had the engine ready to come out and had a place to put it , he just used the boom and it took about 5 min's and cost $35 bucks.

Re: cherry picker

i used a backhoe twice and an overhead hoist at my neighborhood garage. The hoist is much better. My boat is a 23' cruiser, high sides, too high for a tow truck, yours may not be. The backhoe is jumpy and I was worried the engine would hit my boat. Another idea, if you are having the engine rebuilt by a local shop or getting one predone from a local supplier, they have hoists. get the engine ready, take everything off trailer it over there they pullit out, you leave it for a core or to rebuild.

Re: cherry picker

Ive used everything from a tree limb to an overhead host. And yes we call them cherry pickers in Va. also. My guess is that it will not have enough lift at the full extended position to do it safely without the possibility of turning over on itself. I saw a 454 dropped from one once and it wasn't pretty. They normally will only give enough clearance to clear the bumper of a car. Go for the wrecker it cleared mine on a 24 foot Cobia and the price is right. How about and old heavey swing set? Lift the motor and drive the boat out from under it. You need a safe working load of 1000 plus pounds. (Engine only without manifold probly weighs 350lbs.)

Re: cherry picker

I rented one from a local tool rental that was called a hi-lift. this thing had a trailer hitch built into its design so you just hooked it up to the back of the truck and hauled it home. pulled the engine out of a 21 ft chris with room to spare

Re: cherry picker

It's a cherry picker in Missouri too :)

Before we actually got one, we always used the tractor with a front end loader when we swaped engines in the cars..... cherry picker works much better as you have MUCH more control.

I'd say jack the front way up, deflate the trailer tires and have at it. do a dry run first to see just how high you can get it, and get that chain as short as you possibly can.

Re: cherry picker

It's also called a cherry picker here too ;) (and I've often heard of bucket trucks referred to as the same). If you plan on renting one, give them a call and ask how high they will lift. Most of them are made for autos and will not lift that high, but some places have ones that will. They usually rent for about 25$ a day.
