Checking the Spark Plugs

I own a 1990 4hp Johnson Seahorse. I am thinking of replacing the sparks. How do i cheak the olds sparks for spark. Do i just try to start it without the pipes. HOW? PLEASE HELP?<br />THANK YOU

Hi, Tommo.<br /><br />Remove the spark plugs. Reconnect the one you want to check to the wire and hold it against the block (CAREFULLY :eek: )while you spin the engine or have a helper spin it. You should see a hot, blue or white spark.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

BUT...remember that just because you see a spark it doesn't mean the plug body is without cracks or that the plug is working under compression. Keep a spare plug around to change out when testing. Swap it for the old plug and it will remove any mystery.

Dont forget to put a little Moly grease or some neverseize on the threads before you install the new plugs! Just a little goes a long ways!!<br /><br />LubeDude
