Okay Guys I am checking the coils on for my forward and reverse on my electricshift. Now I have read the forums and all of them say that they should read between 4.5 and 6.5 Ohms. I have tried and continuosly get 7.5 on both of them. I need to know if that means they are still good or do I need to change them?

Are you checking them with the wires connected or disconnected?

Reinell I am checking them through the cable that wouldgo into the intermediate hoosing. I have not yet pulled the outdrive apart.

Have you shorted the leads of your meter together and adjusted the zero point?

It's probably fine, higher temps will increase resistance. Typically published resistance readings are from 65-70?F

I would assume the values you are finding are for direct testing... so depending on the wire, and like Don said, the temp of that wire.. I am sure your higher value is fine...

Re: Checking Magnetic Coils

a shot of grease in the trunnion bearings, or wire brushing the stainless bonding wire connections will bring it down an ohm usually too. As mentioned, touch the leads of the meter together. If it reads "X" ohms, subtract that "x" from the test reading or buy a new battery for your meter. Unfortunately, not many meters are zero-able anymore.
I think Reinell was initially asking if the harness to the shifter was unplugged (knife connections uncoupled). They should be.
